Rachel Taylor’s ‘Make It In Design’ E-Course: The Dashwood Studio Brief

Dashwood Studio are delighted to be a part of Rachel Taylor’s upcoming ‘Make It In Design‘ e-course. This e-course is all about the Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design and we couldn’t be happier to be involved in setting one of the live design briefs for students going through this module of the Design School.

Make It In Design

What is the ‘Design School’ all about?

Rachel Taylor has set up this e-course as the definitive guide to becoming a surface pattern design professional – guiding aspiring designers to launch a successful career. The course is delivered in modules, and you can take 1, 2 or all of the modules – depending on the areas you want guidance, training and support on.

The modules are:

1. Designing Your Way
2. Creating Your Professional Identity
3. Monetising Your Designs
4. Building Your Professional Portfolio

How are Dashwood Studio involved?

Rachel has asked Dashwood Studio to set one of the briefs for students going through the course. The brief comes under Module 4, which is all about building your Professional Portfolio as a surface pattern designer. As we work with many surface pattern designers here at Dashwood, we felt able to set a brief which would challenge the students and give them insight into what we look for when working with new designers.

This is what Rachel says about Module 4:

“This course has been developed in response to popular demand from graduates of Module 3, but is open to anyone who has some experience in surface pattern design and wishes to concentrate on growing their body of commercially-viable work. Module 4 is an intense seven week course, which consists of five weeks of class plus two weeks of design reviews.”

Module 4 Dates:

March 24, 2014 – May 10, 2014
(5 wks + 2 wks of reviews)

You can find out more about our brief, and this module of the course here.

It’s all systems go here at Dashwood as we prepare for our first proper outing at a trade show –  The Craft, Hobby and Stitch International show at the NEC to be exact. The show takes place 16-18th Feb so we’ve a lot to get organised in the next few days.

It will be also be the first official outing for our latest collection Wildwood – which has just come in from the printers and is being distributed to our stockists around the world.

We’ve pulled in lots of favours from our crafty friends who’ve been quickly whizzing up quilts, cushions, lampshades, clothes and accessories using the fabric so we can showcase it at its best on our show stand KO6:

Here’s a little sneak peak of our preparation for the show (excuse the mess!):
